Finally, Multi Choice monopoly has been broken as a High Court in Port Harcourt has issued a restraining order against the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) and Multichoice, preventing them from further harassing Dr. Ifeanyi Nwafor, Managing Director of Metro Digital Limited. Presiding Judge Justice Chinwendu Nwogu ruled that Dr. Nwafor is entitled to his fundamental rights, including personal liberty, freedom of expression, and freedom of movement, as enshrined in sections 35, 39, and 41 of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution. Metro Digital had previously approached the court to compel Multichoice to sublicense channels to it in accordance with the National Broadcasting Code. The Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt ruled in favor of Metro Digital, affirming their rights against intimidation and harassment by the NCC and Multichoice. GoodNews: Supreme Court grants financial autonomy to Local GovernmentsLGs autonomy

The Supreme Court has barred the 36 governors of the federation from further retaining or utilizing funds that are meant for the 774 Local Government Areas, LGAs, in the country.  The apex court ruled that it is illegal and unconstitutional for governors to continue to receive and seize funds allocated to LGAs in their states.  It maintained that the “dubious practice” which has gone on for over two decades, was a clear violation of Section 162 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended. In its lead judgement that was delivered by Justice Emmanuel Agim, the apex court held that no House of Assembly of any state has the power to make laws that could, in any manner, interfere with monies meant for the LGAs. A community leader, who pleaded anonymity, described the attack as a “devastating ambush”. "The National Assembly on Tuesday, granted full financial and administrative autonomy to all the 774 local council authorities across Nigeria by amending section 124 of the nation’s constitution. The section provides a consequential provision for the making of the local councils, a full third tier government without undue interference from the state governments. The ammendment was one of the 22 others approved by the House of Representatives last week and ratified by the Senate on Tuesday. Both chambers had through a conference committee harmonised versions of the ammendments into the constitution carried out by each of them last month. Good news as the embattled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has agreed to abide by any condition the Federal Government would give for his release from detention. iKemba News reports that this was disclosed on Wednesday by the Senator representing Abia South, Enyinnaya Abaribe, when he led other Senators from the South East region of Nigeria to a meeting with the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, to demand the release of the detained IPOB leader. Abaribe, who is also former Senate Minority Leader disclosed that he had already met with Kanu at the headquarters of the Department of State Services (DSS). Even though the meeting was held in camera, however, Senator Abaribe, who spoke on behalf of his colleagues, said he was optimistic that the AGF would persuade the Federal Government to heed to the call for Kanu’s release.
